For millions of salary earners in India, Provident Fund savings are an important means of securing their future financially. But many employees who have switched jobs before the Universal Account Number scheme was introduced in 2014 usually forgot about their EPF accounts. Because of forgotten PF account numbers, inactive balances, and the cumbersome procedure, there is a lot of unclaimed PF money lying around.
In order to help such account holders retrieve their money, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is all set to introduce a digital platform named E-PRAAPTI. Through this platform, the organization aims at helping users trace and recover their old, unused, or inactive PF accounts.
What is E-PRAAPTI?
E-PRAAPTI is short for EPF Aadhaar-Based Access Portal for Tracking Inoperative Accounts. The online platform will help EPFO members link their old or inactive provident fund accounts.
The new system will facilitate Aadhaar-based authentication, which will allow employees to log in and manage their old accounts without undergoing elaborate processes. This will benefit those individuals who have previously worked in the organized sector but are facing challenges in linking their old accounts to the current EPF profile.
Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Labour and Employment minister, revealed that the online platform will be introduced as part of the EPFO’s initiative to adopt a digital strategy in its operations.
Importance of This Portal
Prior to 2014, the EPF accounts were restricted to specific employers and did not share a common identification system. Consequently, this would pose several difficulties when workers moved from one organization to another since each employee would generate several accounts without a proper monitoring mechanism.
Consequently:
1. Employees had forgotten details of their old PF accounts.
2. Several PF accounts were left dormant following job transitions.
3. Claiming money involved cumbersome documentation.
4. Reliance on the employer’s consent slowed down claim resolution.
5. Unused PF accounts remained unutilized.
E-PRAAPT I would help solve these problems by ensuring that users combine and activate those dormant accounts that have become invisible from the EPFO system.
As per available reports, the first phase of this website would enable access using Member ID verification, whereas future phases might be able to extend this facility to people who are unable to recall any of the account details.
Steps Involved In Claiming Funds Using E-PRAAPTI
The upcoming portal would facilitate easy claiming of PF funds. The process of using this portal would involve the following steps:
1. Identity Verification Using Aadhaar
Here, users can use Aadhaar-enabled identification.
2. Searching for Old PF Accounts
The portal would assist users in identifying inactive or dormant accounts related to their work history.
3. Linking Old PF Accounts to UAN
Users can link those old PF accounts with their latest UANs.
4. Updating Profile
Individuals can make necessary changes to basic account details, including KYC, banking details, and employment information.
5. Reactivating Old Accounts
Users can revive their old PF accounts, facilitating smoother fund transfers or withdrawals.
Who Will Benefit the Most?
E-PRAAPT I will mostly serve:
1. Employees working before 2014
2. People having more than one EPF account
3. Employees switching jobs often
4. Employees forgetting their old Member IDs
5, Retirees wishing to withdraw old balances
6. Families withdrawing PF of deceased members
A number of people in India have faced problems retrieving their PF savings only due to the creation of their PF accounts during the physical filing era. This portal might offer some reprieve to such people.
EPFO’s Journey towards Digitization
It should be noted that the introduction of the E-PRAAPTI platform is not a one-off move. Instead, it is part of the organization’s wider strategy for digital transformation.
According to recent statistics, there has been a tremendous improvement in EPFO’s processing efficiency:
8.31 crore claims were settled in FY26.
5.51 crore advance withdrawal claims processed
71.11% claims settlement in three days.
98.7% of claims processed within 20 days
In April 2026 alone, 61.03 lakh claims were settled by EPFO. Mostly, these settlements took place automatically.
This clearly shows the growing emphasis of the government on speedier service delivery through technology.
Things Users Must Know Prior to the Launch of the Portal
Users who wish to access the services offered by the portal must:
1. Update their Aadhar data.
2. Make sure their mobile numbers are linked to their Aadhaar & UAN numbers.
3. Prepare old salary slips or appointment letters.
4. Have previous employer details handy.
Update KYC details
Find out if they have multiple PF accounts.
Find out the member ID of their old company.
Getting all this data in place before launching the portal would make accessing it easier.
It Will Be Huge for Salaried Employees
E-PRAAPTI might prove to be a great initiative towards addressing one of the biggest concerns of Indian employees – recovering old PF balances.
For decades now, employees have been suffering because of record loss and dependency on employers and offline systems to find information about old PF balances. Through this portal, the EPFO is trying to build a transparent and easy mechanism through which they can get back old retirement money.
Experts from the industry expect that a big chunk of unclaimed PF money will return into the fold through this portal.
This also indicates how much the Indian government is embracing technology as its preferred tool for governance.
