India Domestic Air Traffic Falls 6.3% in August 2026; IndiGo, SpiceJet Lose Share
India domestic air traffic fell 6.34% in August 2026 to 121.26 lakh passengers. IndiGo lost market share, while Air India Group gained ground.

India’s domestic aviation market grew at a slower pace in August 2026, as domestic airlines ferried 121.26 lakh flyers during the month. As per the newest statistics from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the nation’s passenger site visitors dipped 6.34% in August 2026 in comparison with the same month final 12 months when carriers have been carrying 129.47 lakh of us.

Recent figures suggest the India’s air travel market is on a weaker patch following the bumpier passenger movement encountered in the first half of the year. Meanwhile, the latest August figures demonstrate shifts in the competitive dynamic between the top airlines, with IndiGo experiencing a slight loss in market share, but the Air India Group gaining.

Domestic Aviation Growth Loses Momentum

However, the decline in August implies that demand from passengers has eased across the domestic air market. For the period as a whole though, the picture continues to look relatively unchanged.

Indian domestic airlines operated 1,105.30 lakh passengers from January to August 2026. A year before, the same period saw 1,107.26 lakh passengers, representing a slight dip of 0.18%.

Meaning overall the passenger table is still fairly consistent to the last year.

For airlines, the traffic movement has become an issue of capacity planning and should take into account their available seats as well as passenger demand, simultaneously with aircraft utilisation, operating costs and route network.

IndiGo Remains Market Leader but Share Declines

IndiGo retained its position as India’s dominant domestic airline in August. However, the company’s market share declined to 65 per cent from 67.4 per cent in July.

It is a 2.4-percentage-point fall in the airline’s market share in a month’s time. IndiGo ferried approximately 78.87 lakh passengers in the month of August in the latest published traffic report.

Market share up again, on-time performance still the best among the Big 4 Meanwhile, IndiGo maintained the best on-time performance among the Big 4 at the 10 airports for which the DGCA measures on-time performance, in spite of losing market share. The airline had an on-time performance of 91.5% in August.

Thus, the data yields two distinct dimensions to the airline’s august performance, both of which relate to its market share: it remained the largest airline, but was not as dominant within the entire domestic passenger market.

Air India Group Gains Market Share

The Air India Group saw the most significant change among the main airline groups.

Its share of the combined domestic market jumped to 26.7% in August from 24% in July, a gain of 2.7 percentage points in a month.

The move follows stiff competition between India’s two biggest airline groups-Air India and its affiliate carriers. As Air India group and its sister airlines expand their footprint, the decline in passenger share of the top two carriers has become an important industry metric.

Air India Group achieved an 83.9% on-time performance at the 10 major airports in August, according to data from the DGCA.

Spice Jet Continues to Lose Market Share

Another dip in the domestic traffic share for Spice Jet in August.

The airline had a 1.2% market share as against 1.6% in July. The dip comes as the carrier is managing its operations as well as trying to beef up its share in the heavily contested domestic airline segment.

The recent figures illustrate the growing disparity between India’s biggest airlines and the other players taking a smaller share of the market.

Akasa Air Holds Steady

With the exception of Akasa Air, which retained its market share at 5.5% in August and July.

Similarly, at the 10 major airports the airline also delivered an on-time percentage of 90.5% below only that of IndiGo in this particular set of operations.

Its concentration will show that the airline maintained its market share even as passengers to the country fell.

What August Numbers Say About Indian Aviation

Mixed picture for Indian aviation sector in August data August sector data show a mixed picture. While the number of passengers declined YoY for the month, the January-August numbers stayed flat YoY.

The more encouraging aspect was the shift in airline shares. IndiGo maintained its leadership position in the domestic market but its share declined in August. The Air India Group gained while Spice Jet lost once again.

The new car comes in five formats, starting with the base Style, which is priced from $29,995 without delivery charges. All models are front-wheel drive, with a 75-kWh electric battery, the reports said.

Looking ahead, passenger demand, airline capacity, operational performance and network growth will continue to be the determinants of domestic air travel. We will look to the months ahead to see if the decrease seen in August was merely a blip or part of a trend of a plateau in air travel demand.

The latest numbers from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) show that India’s aviation market is still a massive and competitive one. But the picture of growth has become slightly more uneven across airlines.
