India Industrial Output Grows 8% in August 2026, Manufacturing Up 9%
India’s industrial output grew 8% in August 2026, led by 9% manufacturing growth and a 12.3% rise in electricity and gas supply.

Industrial production in India accelerated even more in August 2026, driven largely by a marked acceleration in the country’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP). According to official figures released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), this represented a year-on-year increase of 8% in August, compared with the upwardly revised 7.4% in July.

Indian industrial production data on Thursday indicated that manufacturing activity and electricity generation remained robust, albeit in the case of the mining sector continued to be impacted. The IIP index reading for August was 123.3 as against 114.2 a year ago. The August reading is a quick estimate and could be upgraded in subsequent releases.

Manufacturing Growth Reaches 9%

Manufacturing continued to be the dominant driver of India’s growth in industrial output for August. The sector grew at 9 per cent year-on-year, which was its third successive month of 8 per cent+ expansion.

Manufacturing has the biggest share in the IIP, so its change in figures will have a significant impact on the total industrial growth figure. Industrial growth was up 8.2% in July after revision, indicating that factory activity is still on the rise.

These figures were also up on the previous month in August, with 18 of the 23 manufacturing industry groups, registering year-on-year growth. Electrical equipment was one of the most robust categories, up 30.9%.

Transport equipment other than trains increased 25.3%. Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers increased 25.2%. This division, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, auto parts and other related products, was driven by increased production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Electricity and Gas Supply Posts Double-Digit Growth

Electricity and gas supply contributed another important growth in industrial output in August. This subsector grew by 12.3% YoY in August, compared to 8.7% in the previous month.

Renewable electricity generation was 15.4% higher, while non-renewable electricity generation was 12.3% higher in April 2023, compared with April 2022. Gas supply was 2.4% lower in April 2023.

The good electricity performance pointed to increased activity across the wider economy and helped push the wider growth in industrial production.

Mining Remains a Weak Spot

Mining and quarrying still dragged down the headline, despite the faster overall number The mines and quarrying segment fell 5.6 per cent in August, in comparison to the 0.9 per cent decline the month before.

Minerals other than metallic minerals fell by 12.8 per cent in April this year. Fuel minerals dipped by 5.7 per cent, whereas metallic minerals jumped by 5 per cent in April as compared to the same month last year.

Different from the overall manufacture mining situation, this shows that manufacturing recovery has not been broad based.

Capital Goods and Consumer Durables Show Strength

The use-based classification of IIP also pointed towards more momentum in investment-related areas. Production of capital goods expanded 16.9% in August. Production of intermediate goods was higher by 13.7%.

11.1% growth in Consumer Durables indicating better production of items like consumer electronics and other durable goods. Infrastructure and Construction goods in a positive growth of 6.4%.

So the weak overall number was driven by the poor investment number which only rose 2.1%. Consumer non-durables rose just 2.1%, while primary goods grew 3.5%. The data indicates investment industrials were holding up reasonably well for the month.

Industrial Growth in April-August 2026

The other positive indicator is that the augmentation in August further aided the cumulative show of the industries sector for the current economic year. For the period of April to August 2026, India’s industrial output expanded 6.7% as against 4.2% for the comparable period of the previous year.

Thus, even after 6-months into FY27, industrial activity has remained relatively firm than past year.

What the August IIP Data Implication for India’s Economy

Industrial output growth at 8% in August shows signs of pick-up in manufacturing & investment during the period. Continued growth in manufacturing, positive numbers in electricity generation, more than double digit growth in capital goods production indicates some broad based acceleration in industrial activity.

Meanwhile, the slowdown in mining indicates that certain segments of the manufacturing industry are still struggling. As the August IIP figures are subject to revision, the ultimate conclusion on the industrial picture rests on the data to follow.

In conclusion, the IIP report for August 2026 reflects a robust growth in industrial production in India, with manufacturing accounting for the lion’s share at 9% of the total, aided by a spike in electricity and gas supply.
