Southern Railway Achieves 100% Electrification: 5,068 Km Network Now Fully Electric
Southern Railway achieves 100% electrification across its 5,068-km Broad Gauge network, boosting train efficiency, reducing diesel dependence and supporting green rail transport.

Southern Railway has set a major milestone as the entire Broad Gauge network of 5,068 RKM of the Zone is now fully electrified. It is first time in Southern Railway history that the entire broad gauge network of the zone (50.68 RKM) has been totally electrified. It is a step towards modernisation of Indian Railways.

The last leg of the electrification programme was finished with the electrification of the 71-km Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi railway section in Tamil Nadu. The entire 214 kms long electrified Broad Gauge network of Southern Railway now meets the requirements for operating electric trains without the need for any change of traction within the zone after the commissioning and statutory inspection of the newly electrified section on 09.09.2023.

Southern Railway Electrification Reaches 100%

5,068 RKM Electrification of Southern Railway is now complete covering the entire Broad Gauge network of 5,068 RKM. Significance- When the entire broad-gauge network is fully electrified, there is no need for trains to change traction from electric to diesel and vice versa.

The last stretch of Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi was the missing link in the zone’s electrification scheme. Once this route was electrified, the entire Broad Gauge network of Southern Railway can be manned by electric locomotives.

In the case of the railway system the development is likely to provide additional operational flexibility and better utilisation of electric locomotives. It can also result in more efficient scheduling and movement of trains around the network.

No More Traction Changes for Southern Railway

The top operational advantage of total electrification is the traction changes that are eliminated on the entire electrified Broad Gauge network of the zone.

Previously, as trains traversed the portions of the route where electric traction was unavailable, it became necessary to alter the locomotive or traction distribution. Since the entire route of the Southern Railway Broad Gauge is now electrified, it is unnecessary to make those changes in the zone.

Operational interruptions can therefore be minimized and the usage of locomotives can be improved. This allows the railway authorities to be more flexible when it comes to planning the movement of trains and the allocation of electric locomotives.

This is of importance especially since Indian Railways is further moving towards adoption of more electric traction power and a modern rail network.

Fuel Efficiency and Lower Fossil Fuel Dependence

The Southern Railway 100% electrification of the entire railway also has a significant energy aspect.

(Electric) Traction This type of energy also can help lower the reliance of the railway network on diesel, which can be in support of efficient use of energy and can help to lower the reliance on fossil fuels. (Diesel) train operation can also be less environmentally impactful as more railway operation turns to electricity.

So the transition does not mean in particular that the trains will run faster or more smoothly. It is part of a broader plan to create a transportation infrastructure which is more energy efficient and sustainable.

Southern Railway has outlined the opportunity for enhanced energy efficiency, operational performance and greener rail travel once the electrification works are complete.

A 95-Year Journey Towards Full Electrification

The achievement on Thursday was a first on many counts. The Electric traction activity of Southern Railway has a history of more than 88 years. Madras became the second metro city of India, after Bombay to get electric traction on May 11, 1931.

Another milestone was reached in 1968 with the start of 25 kV AC electrification between Madras Beach and Tambaram.

Ever since then, the electrification drive has been gradually extended over the whole of Southern Railway’s network of lines. It is in the 95th year of the first electric traction run at Madras, that the zone has made its 5068 km Broad Gauge network an all-electric zone.

What Full Electrification Means for Passengers

While the effects of railway electrification may not be obvious for passengers, they can enhance the efficiency of overall train operations.

Electrification enables trains to move faster, improves locomotive efficiency and creates a smoother ride. As there is no need to change traction, movement on the fully electrified Southern Railway network may also become more efficient.

This could also aid long-term expansion of train services and enhanced connectivity as the railway operators develop infrastructure.

Boost to India’s Green Railway Goals

The Southern Railway electrification achievement further aids India’s pursuit of greener and more sustainable modes of transportation.

Railways are one of the most energy-efficient forms of mass transport and additional electric traction inroads will reduce the usage of fossil fuels. Complete electrification of the three primary railway zones will form an integral part of India’s longer-term process of modernisation of the rail network.

While Southern Railway is 100% electrified, trains can now concentrate on improving capacity, reliability, speed and passenger services.

Conclusion

Southern Railway 5,068 RKM Broad Gauge network with 100% electrification is an important landmark in the infrastructure history of Indian Railways. The last 71 km. Stretch of Pattukkottai – Karaikkudi has achieved the end of electrification journey for the zone and eliminated the requirement of change of traction on the entire electrified Broad Gauge network.

In addition to the opportunities presented by the switching to electric, the broader development might enhance locomotive utilisation, operational convenience, and energy efficiency and will lessen reliance on fossil fuels. As the Indian Railways moves towards modernising and greening, the Southern Railway, achievement is yet another step in the right direction.
